Tourism Attractions
The capital of the island Cyprus is Lefkosia (Nicosia). The city is cut in two by the Green Line, which divides the country. It's the only divided capital in the world. The old town, inside the 16th-century Venetian walls, is the most interesting part of Lefkosia. Paphos, a city on the western coast, is most famous because of its mosaics. These were originally laid in the 3rd century as floors for Roman nobles. Famagusta (Gazimagusa) is to be found just north of the Green Line in the county's east. A Venetian city wall surrounds the old town. The city is well known for its legends of Othello's Tower. Kyrenia (Girne) is the most pleasant coastal resort on Cyprus. In the south of Cyprus, the mountains of the Troodos Massif are to be found. This area is popular for skiing and hiking. Other interesting activities in Cyprus are visiting Salamis, Cyprus' most important pre-Christian city, windsurfing, sailing, diving, mountain biking and golf. |
