CyclingSince 2002 there are more than 17,000 kilometres of cycling tracks and routes in the Czech Republic. As many as 7,000 kilometres were added in the year 2001 alone. These figures show that cycling is experiencing a great boom in Bohemia and Moravia. New routes and marked cycling paths are being devised. There are regional, thematic as well as cross-border routes. The territory of the Czech Republic has excellent conditions for the development of this active way of spending holidays. It offers diverse and picturesque landscapes, great natural beauty as well as a wealth of historic monuments that can be visited. Cyclists can use accommodation facilities of all categories. Hiking and trekkingMarking and maintaining hiking paths is one of the most important activities carried out by members of the Czech Hiking Club. They have been doing this ever since 1889 and since 1997 they have also been marking trails for cross-country skiers and cyclists. The network of hiking paths in the Czech Republic is rated as being the best in Europe in view of its density, quality and the fact that it covers the whole of the country. You will find all the marked paths in maps published by the Czech Hiking Club.By the end of the year 1998, there was a total of 37,682 kilometres of marked hiking paths and 130.5 kilometres of skiing trails in the Czech Republic. They had a total of 54,711 signs and boards and 1,590 laminated maps put up by the wayside. In 1998, there were 1,145 people looking after the signs and paths. That year, they worked a total of 59,000 hours.
MonumentsThe Czech Republic has no sea or ocean on its borders. However, it can boast a veritable sea of monuments. Czechia is often referred to as a superpower in relation to the number of monuments belonging to the UNESCO World Heritage list. Apart from a large number of castles, stately homes and castle ruins of all styles of architecture, also well worth visiting are monuments of Folk architecture and open-air museums as well as urban and village conservation areas.
