Amman is the capital of Jordan. This city is at least 5000 years old, and is sprinkled with Roman ruins. Amman is one of the friendliest cities in Jordan. Jerash is a beautifully preserved Roman city. The area has probably been inhabited since Neolithic times. Inside the city walls there is the Temple of Zeus. In the desert, east of Amman, lies a string of castles which were built in the 7th century. Some were originally Roman buildings, and others date back to the Nabataeans. The Mountain Nebo is said to be the site from which Moses overlooked the Dead Sea and affords a magnificent view of Palestine. The Franciscan monks bought this site in the 1930s and have excavated the ruins of a sixth century church, which many believe was built over the burial place of Moses. The Dead Sea, is situated 55km from Amman. The Dead Sea lies at the lowest point on Earth. As its name suggests, the sea is devoid of all life, due to an extremely high content of salts and minerals. Because of these salts and minerals it is possible to float in the water. Other activities in Jordan are diving, climbing, hiking and camel trekking.
