Russia's capital is Moscow which is well-known for the kremlin and the Red Square. St. Petersburg is the city of Peter the Great, where a lot of relics of tsarist days are virtually intact. Attractions in this city are the State Heritage Museum, Peter and Paul Fortress and also the Nevski prospect. Novgorod dates from the 9th century and is Russia's pioneering and political centre. Novgorod is also interesting for its Kremlin with the Byzantine Cathedral of St. Sophia, the Yaraslov Court with medieval markets, churches, arcades and Palace Remains. The Church of Our Saviour-at-Llino is one of the most beautiful churches in Russia. The Transsiberian Railway takes you in 6 days (9446 km) from Moscow to Vladivostok on the Pacific coast. It is one of the best ways to see this massive county. The Volga, Europe's longest River runs from Yaroslav in the north of Moscow to the Caspian sea. Cruisers and steamships ply the Volga's waters, the most interesting section is between Volgograd and Rostov-on-Don. Intersting activities in Russia include trekking, mountaineering, hiking, kayaking, cycling, skiing in the Caucasus or leisurely expedition to the North Pole.
