Tourism Attractions
Colombo is the capital city of Sri Lanka. The north of Colombo is called the Fort district, the country's business centre. The city has many mosques, Buddhist and Hindu temples. The city Kandy is built around a peaceful lake. The most important attraction is the Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth), a temple which houses Sri Lanka's most important religious relic, the sacred tooth of Buddha. Anuradhapura is Sri Lanka's first capital. The Sacred Bo-Tree is the city's holiest site, and was grown from the tree under which Buddha achieved enlightenment. Negombo was an important business centre for the Portuguese and the Dutch. The canals and the Roman Catholic churches are reminders of the Dutch reigning. Nowadays Negombo is a lovely place on the coast with large beaches. Yala West is one of the few national parks still open to travellers. From December to April, pilgrims converge to climb the 2224m Adam's Peak. At the top is a huge footprint, claimed by Muslims to belong to Adam, who stood there in expiation of his sin in the Garden of Eden. Interesting activities in Sri Lanka include trekking, surfing, snorkelling, diving, scuba diving, swimming and sailing. |
