The people from Suriname form an interesting mix of cultures and ethnicities. The combination of all kinds of ethnicities like the Dutch, the many Africans and Indian workers, make Paramaribo a divers and lively city. The people are kind and welcoming, and their lifestyle is 'no span', which means the same as 'don't worry'. Also the Surinam kitchen is a must. There are countless good restaurants, food stalls and bars where you can try - for instance - the real Surinamese Roti.
Paramaribo is a former Dutch colonial town from the 17th and 18th century. Its buildings illustrate the fusion of Dutch architectural influence and are built with traditional techniques and materials. This combination of cultures is so special, that UNESCO inscribed Paramaribo on the new World Heritage list. |
